Sugarloaf Resort

As I wrote on Monday, we drove our Teslas up to Sugarloaf Resort in Maine on Tuesday and returned on Thursday. As it turns out, we couldn’t have wished for better weather. Sugarloaf had more than 2 feet of new snow from the past weekend storm, and Wednesday dawned sunny and cold, making the conditions perfect for skiing. Here are some shots from our day on the mountain.

The view from the top

The trees looked just like they are pictured in skiing brochures

The panoramas from the mountain were jaw-droppingly beautiful

The bright sun made goggles a must

For those interested in our electric car experience going up and back, we stopped to charge at Kennebunk and Farmington superchargers in both directions just to make sure we had plenty of electrons for the trip regardless of the cold. Neither supercharger was very busy; we typically would see 1 or 2 other Teslas when we stopped. There were also ChargePoint level 2 chargers for non-Teslas at both locations, but we never saw them in use.

While we didn’t absolutely need them, we did take advantage of the Tesla 240v destination chargers at the hotel to top off our cars. The hotel also has 2 non-Tesla chargers, but those only operate at 110 volts, which means that non-Tesla owners should plan on long charging times. Sugarloaf also has additional chargers down at the bottom of parking lot C, but we didn’t investigate those.

Overall, we hope Sugarloaf installs a lot more level 2 charging stations in the future. We a variety of electric vehicles in the parking lot, including all four models of Teslas, a Rivian, a Ford Mustang Mach-E, some Kias, and a GM Bolt. I’m sure there were many more that we didn’t see. Given how cold and remote Sugarloaf is, installing more destination chargers would reduce a lot of range anxiety among new EV-driving guests.
