About Me

I have retired from industry. I now spend most of my time singing with New World Chorale and other groups, doing various amateur radio projects, traveling with my family, and acting as furniture for our two cats. I’m a big proponent of solar power, electric cars, energy storage, and doing what I can to save the environment.

Prior to my retirement, I spent my career using words and data to predict the future of technology and helping others understand it. I was last the Content Marketing Lead at Posit PBC, a firm dedicated to open source and enterprise tools for the data science. Prior to this position, I was Director of Education at RStudio, where I focused my efforts on training the next million R users and heading up the workshops program at our annual conference, rstudio::conf (nowadays, that’s posit::conf). In 2020, RStudio’s workshop program at rstudio::conf comprised 19 workshops, employed more than 100 teaching staff, and taught more than 1,300 students, making it the largest R training event in the world.

If I look or sound somewhat familiar, prior to RStudio, I was a technology analyst and communications consultant for several market research firms such as 451 Research, Yankee Group, and Forrester Research. I was interviewed for my insights on technology changes in television venues ranging from The Today Show to The CBS Evening News, and I spoke at events in the United States, Europe and Asia. I was a regular commentator on trends in technology for All Things Considered and Marketplace, and my analytical work was often quoted in print publications including The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, The Times of London, and other newspapers around the world. In 2002, I was named one of the top 20 most influential US industry analysts by Technology Marketing magazine.

I have an S.B. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and have served on the faculty of MIT and Wellesley College. I live in the Boston suburbs with my wife and sons and am a devoted servant to Buffy and Waffles, our cat overlords.
